Why Ohana Kids Therapy?

Having worked as an Early Childhood Intervention Professional for over a decade, Sarah Chew has witnessed the ups and downs of supporting families and children with additional needs. The word “Ohana,” meaning family in Hawaiian, encapsulates her belief that family is at the heart of every child’s development and success.

A defining moment in Sarah’s career that solidified her vision was when a mother shared that it was the first time in four years she had been able to truly enjoy playing with her daughter, after years of caring for her with limited connection. It was a bittersweet moment that reinforced Sarah’s commitment to making a difference in both the lives of children and their families.

At Ohana Kids Therapy, we are dedicated to supporting children not only from the perspective of speech and development, but also by understanding the complexity of family dynamics. We recognize the importance of helping children participate in natural settings such as home, kindergartens, childcare, playgrounds, and even shops, endeavoring participation in different aspects of life.

Some fun facts

Sarah was once part of a trans-disciplinary key worker team for over 8 years with a reputable organization. Despite her strong passion for the Key Worker approach, which she recognizes as one of the best practices in Early Intervention, Sarah made the difficult decision to adjust her approach due to personal circumstances and health reasons.

As an Early Intervention Professional and Speech Pathologist, Sarah understands the demands of her role, which requires constant presence, skill development, and staying up-to-date with the latest evidence-based research. She is committed to providing the highest standard of care to her clients.

Although Ohana Kids Therapy does not currently operate as a formal key worker model due to our team structure, Sarah’s extensive training and experience with this approach enable her to deliver integrated, family-centered support. She works closely with other allied-health professionals involved in her clients’ care, ensuring a consistent and holistic approach whenever possible.

Sarah is dedicated to being fully present in every session, offering personalized, one-on-one support to both children and their families.

As Sarah continues to work towards establishing a Key-Worker/Transdisciplinary approach, she welcomes experienced allied-health therapists (e.g., Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists) who are familiar with this model to reach out for a discussion or partnership.
